The calculator is an estimate

The calorie and portion figures are produced from a standard formula using the values you type in. The formula is published and repeatable; your dog is not. Body condition, muscle mass, ambient temperature, illness and individual metabolism all change the real requirement, often by 20% or more in either direction. Treat the result as a starting point to be checked against the dog's weight over two weeks, not as a target to be followed blindly.

The recipes are bases, not complete diets

Every recipe on this site is an incomplete ingredient base. A home-cooked diet only becomes complete with a vitamin and mineral supplement formulated for it, by a veterinarian or a board-certified veterinary nutritionist. Feeding a home-cooked diet without an appropriate supplement causes deficiencies that can take months to appear and can be permanent. Recipe formulation services are available from veterinary nutritionists and from commercial completer systems such as Balance IT.

Always consult a veterinarian

Speak to your veterinarian before changing your dog's diet, especially if the dog is a puppy, pregnant or nursing, a large or giant breed, elderly, or has any diagnosed condition. If your dog has kidney disease, heart disease, pancreatitis or diabetes, do not use a generic recipe from this site at all — that is why the calculator stops and hands you numbers to take to your vet instead.
