The recipe for stiff joints

The recipe for better joints

Every kilo a dog carries puts four kilos of load through the elbows. The most effective joint recipe is a lighter bowl, and the second most effective is a fattier one — but only with the right fat.

Read before cooking. This bowl is a base, not a prescription. Every home-cooked diet needs a vitamin and mineral completer formulated for dogs, and a home diet without one causes deficiencies that take months to show.

Why this bowl is built this way

Arthritis in dogs is not solved by a supplement. It is managed, and the biggest lever is body weight: carrying extra fat is itself inflammatory, because adipose tissue releases signals that keep the joint inflamed. A dog that reaches its ideal weight often moves better in eight weeks than one that added a joint pill.

The second lever is the long-chain omega-3s, EPA and DHA. Unlike glucosamine, they have real evidence behind them for pain and mobility in dogs, and the effective dose is higher than most bottles suggest. Green-lipped mussel has small but positive trials. Glucosamine and chondroitin have mixed evidence — not harmful, but not the place to spend first.

What goes in — by share of the bowl

Shares, not grams. The gram column is per kilogram of finished food, so it scales to any batch you cook. Your dog's actual portion comes from the calculator, because it depends on body weight and not on the recipe.

ComponentSharePer 1 kgNotes
Lean protein42%420 gKeeps muscle around the joint. Poached or baked, no fat added.
Carbohydrate — rice or sweet potato22%220 gSweet potato if the dog is constipated; rice if stools are soft.
Vegetables — green leafy plus orange24%240 gCooked. Leafy greens bring vitamin K and magnesium.
Added fat — fish body oil7%70 gThe working ingredient. Refrigerate; rancid oil is worse than none.
Veterinary completer5%50 gBrings the trace minerals a home bowl lacks.

Method

  1. Weigh the dog before you start. If the ribs are hard to feel, this recipe starts with the weight-loss page instead.
  2. Cook the protein plainly and keep every scrap of visible fat out of the pot.
  3. Steam the vegetables until soft; large dogs with sore jaws do better with small pieces.
  4. Add the fish oil off the heat, by measure, not by pour.
  5. Feed two meals a day and keep the daily total constant — joint pain gets worse on a fluctuating ration.
  6. Re-weigh the dog every two weeks. Adjust the ration, not the recipe.

How much to feed

Per day, for this type of dog. Two meals a day is standard for adults; puppies and dogs recovering from stomach trouble do better on three or four smaller ones.

What to watch for

  • Do not start a supplement and a diet in the same week. If the dog improves you will not know which one to keep paying for.
  • Human joint tablets are dosed for a 70 kg person and often contain xylitol or sweeteners. Never split a human tablet for a dog.
  • A dog that suddenly cannot rise, or yelps when lifted, needs a vet today — that is not arthritis.
Talk to your vet. Pain control belongs to your vet. A home bowl supports a joint program; it does not replace one, and it will not touch pain in a dog that needs medication.
