Recipe base

Turkey and sweet potato

A grain-free base for dogs that do better without rice. Also the recipe most likely to be chosen for the wrong reason.

Read before cooking. This is a base, not a complete diet. Every recipe here needs a vitamin and mineral supplement formulated by a veterinarian. Feeding a home-cooked diet without one causes deficiencies that take months to appear.

Why this base exists

Sweet potato carries the carbohydrate with more fiber and more beta-carotene than white rice, and it holds a mix together well. Turkey is lean and slightly richer in some B vitamins than chicken. For a dog whose stools are loose on rice, or one that genuinely reacts to wheat or corn, this base does the job.

What it does not do is cure allergies. In dogs, true food allergy is almost always to an animal protein — beef, dairy, chicken and lamb are the usual suspects — and grain allergy is uncommon and usually part of a broader reaction. A grain-free diet given to a dog allergic to chicken does nothing except cost more. Grain-free is a formulation choice, not a treatment.

What goes in — per 1 kg of finished food

About 1,300 kcal per kilogram. Weigh every component separately; a mix that looks right can be 30% off on calories.

ComponentWeightNotes
Lean ground turkey400 gCook through, drain any liquid. Turkey is leaner than beef but fattier than chicken breast.
Sweet potato, cooked and mashed300 gBake or boil with the skin on, then remove the skin. Mashed, not pureed, so it does not turn to paste.
Spinach and zucchini, cooked200 gSpinach in moderation: it is high in oxalate, which matters for dogs prone to bladder stones.
Added fat — salmon oil50 gSame as the chicken version. The leaner the protein, the more this matters.
Vitamin and mineral supplement50 gNon-negotiable, and one formulated for a grain-free base if you are going without rice.

Method

  1. Bake the sweet potatoes at 200°C until soft through, about 45 minutes. Bake rather than boil so they do not absorb water and dilute the mix.
  2. Cook the turkey in a dry pan until no pink remains, then drain.
  3. Wilt the spinach and cook the zucchini until soft. Squeeze excess water out of the spinach.
  4. Weigh separately, mix, add oil and supplement, portion.

How much to feed

Per day, for a neutered adult at moderate activity. Two meals a day is standard for adults; puppies under six months need three or four smaller meals.

When to use it

A base for dogs with loose stools on rice, or a confirmed reaction to a grain. Not a treatment for allergy unless the allergen was actually identified.

What this recipe is missing

Calcium, again, and then some: sweet potato is low in calcium and high in potassium, spinach adds oxalate, and turkey is a boneless protein with no calcium at all. Without a supplement this mix is further from a balanced diet than the chicken version.
